10 Amazing things to do with kids in Palm Springs

The desert landscape and climate of Palm Springs beckoned us for a multigenerational education adventure and it did not disappoint.
When traveling as a family, we choose destinations with educational experiences for the kids. By visiting locations with diverse learning opportunities, we can take advantage of off-peak travel and not feel guilty about missing a few days of school.
Located two hours from Los Angeles, a visit to Greater Palm Springs is the perfect off-shoot destination to explore by soaking up its natural desert environment, culture, mid-century modern architecture and fun with a little well-earned dose of rest and relaxation.
We visited so many amazing places. It’s easy to find activities to match the interest of any young scholar with Greater Palm Springs rich offerings.
Greater Palm Springs is located in the Coachella Valley on the Colorado Dessert and the area encompasses nine different cities: Palm Springs, Indio, Desert Hot Springs, Palm Desert, Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, Indian Wells, La Quinta and Coachella.
We felt our four night stay gave us a great taste of what the Palm Springs area has to offer but would recommend spending at least seven nights. With direct flights available from many areas, Palm Springs is an easy destination to reach and perfect place to start or to end a Southern California adventure.
When we arrived at the Palm Springs Airport, we were surprised to see snow capped mountains. The San Jancinto mountains are 10,834 feet in elevation.
This location is one of the few places places you can ski and golf on the same day during the winter months.

10 best things to do with kids in Palm Springs
Greater Palm Springs kept the kids engaged and interested with the wide spectrum of things to do to. We started early every day and they were happily worn out by day’s end. The adults even managed to sneak in a well deserved restful in-room hotel spa treatments for some much needed R&R.
1. Roam Palm Canyon, the largest fan palm oasis in the world
Palm Canyon is a stunning natural desert oasis. It is the largest California fan palm oasis in the world. The oasis was a big hit with the family and they could not wait to explore.
Knowledgeable park rangers provided a deeper understanding of the paradise stretched out before us.
Palm Canyon is in Indian Canyons on the ancestral lands of Agua Calliente Band, where the Cahuilla people existed for thousands of years.
The California fan palm is in bloom from February to June and produces palm fruit from June through November. The tiny, sweet, dark purple fruit was an important food source for the Cahuilla. The Indigenous people utilized everything they could from the fan palm. The fruit could be eaten fresh or dried. The seed was ground with flour to make a meal and used in gourd rattles.  They made shelters called a kish made from palm fronds and leafstalks as well as myriad of other items including clothing, baskets, bows, mats, ropes and more.

2. Experience date culture with a famous Sheilds Date Shake
Delicious date shakes have been a signature item in the Palm Springs area since the 1930s. When we heard about Sheilds Date Shake, we had to make a stop at Shields Date Garden in Indio. Sheilds consistently wins accolades for the best date shakes and have been selling dates since 1924. During this time, Floyd Sheilds cultivated 17 different varieties of dates and developed his own hybrids.
Sheilds claims all other shakes are fakes. The thick rich creamy shakes are made with ice cream, blended with Date Crystals® invented by Sheilds. Date Crystals® are not actually crystals. They are oatmeal sized flakes of chopped up dates, that took 17 months for him to perfect.
The impressive range of items for sale of everything date related in the store made us wish we had more room in our luggage. Since our return, we have ordered items from the online store.
The Coachella Valley in the Colorado Desert is the highest producer of dates in the United States. In 2021, California produced 59,450 tons of dates.
We found out that date palms are not native to the Palm Springs area and original imported from North Africa and the Middle East. Date Palms need a warm arid climate to grow and adapt well to extreme drought and this area has the perfect growing conditions. Dates are an important food crop and have been grown for more than 6,000 years.
In the theater, watch the popular movie “Romance and Sex Life of the Date” to learn more about growing dates.
While visiting, make sure to take a walk in Sheilds’ 17-acre date grove and botanical garden. When we visited it was closed due to high winds. The pathway through the gardens winds past 14 biblical scenes and with 23 statues that follows Christ’s life. The story about how these gardens came to be is rather interesting for Canadians coming from British Columbia.
In 2011, the former premier of British Columbia, Bill Vanderzalm and his wife Lillian were looking for a home to relocate their biblical statues in Palm Springs after the sale of their Richmond, BC, Fantasy Gardens. The Vanderzalm’s contacted the Sheilds, and they were interested. Garden construction began and by the end of October 2013 it opened.

3. Fly like a top gun at Palm Springs Air museum
The Palm Springs Air Museum covers history, science and technology all rolled into one, inside and outside the five climate-controlled hangars. The museum is known as one of the world’s largest collections of vintage aircraft. It has more than 70 aircrafts from World War II through Korea and Vietnam wars. Murals and informational signs explain the role of aviation in global conflict.
The kids were super interested in finding out more about the history as they had already been exposed to oral history from their great-grandmother (GG) who worked in a British munitions factory during World War II. Their GG also shared  tales about their great-grandfather who was a member of the Norwegian Resistance, Milorg, Norwegian Independent Company later know as Linge Company working with British Special Operations.

We were excited to see the world’s first operational stealth aircraft, the F-117 Nighthawk. The super sonic jet plane was developed to be nearly undetectable by enemy radar. Lockheed Martin built 59 operational F-117 Nighthawks fighter planes between 1981 and 2008. The public were not made aware of their existence until 1988. The black coloring made these planes harder to see against night skies. Some of these jets were used in Operation Desert Storm.
The museum has ongoing children’s programs and activities and the youth education center is being expanded. Upstairs in the library, the flight simulator adds a fun hands-on dimension.
For a thrill of a lifetime, anyone age 13 and over can book a scenic WarBird flight over the Coachella Valley in a restored World War 11 aircraft.
The museum is an excellent example of Mid-Century Modern architecture.
The Palm Springs Air Museum is located in a at 745 North Gene Autry Trail. Palm Springs.

4. Feed a Giraffe at the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens
We didn’t spend nearly enough time at the Living Dessert Zoo to see all of its more than 600 animals or its 52 gardens, but we came away more than happy with everything we saw and learned about. It was especially valuable to learn about the conservation efforts locally and globally to support endangered species. It was a chance to see deserts from all over the world in one place.
The kids were thrilled to get up close to and feed a giraffe, see the black rhinos, antelopes, camels and, of all things, they absolutely adored the naked mole rat! In the petting zoo, they enjoyed pampering the goats and giving them a brush.
We were surprised to find out the giraffe population is on a steady decline and the Living Desert is working with other partners to address the situation.
We were fortunate to visit on STEAM Career day to learn more about animal care, conservation, engineering, water supply in the desert, health care and information technology.

5. Venture through slot canyons on a Red Jeep Adventure Tour
Red Jeep San Andreas Bones of the Earth Tour was perfect tour for our family group of four. The kids are real enthusiasts about geology and how earth evolved and were eager to explore the desert. We can’t say enough about this tour and highly recommend it.
Highlights of the three-hour tour led by a knowledgeable naturalist guide:

Navigating narrow twists and turns while hiking through several slot canyons.
Learning about the Indigenous history and culture of Cahuilla people.
Finding out about seismology of the California desert at the San Andreas Fault Zone, one of the most active faults in the world.
Hiking through a natural palm oasis where crystal-clear water bubbles up throughout the year.
Learning about the local flora and fauna.
Of course, riding around on the back of a Jeep!

We didn’t have a chance to experience the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway due to storm related road closures. It’s on our list for next time.
8. Soak up the arts and culture in Downtown Palm Springs

In the 50s and 60s iconic Hollywood celebrities like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bob Hope, Bill Crosby, Marilyn Munro, Elvis Presley, Debbie Reynolds, Desi Arnaz (better known for the character he played, Ricky Riccardo) and Lucille Ball flocked to the area that is a short two hour drive from Hollywood studios.

Where to stay in Greater Palm Springs
Indian Wells Resort Hotel
We soaked up the retro vibe during our stay at the Indian Wells Resort Hotel. From the moment we arrived, we knew we had hit the perfect spot to experience the vintage culture of the old Hollywood atmosphere of the 50s and 60s. Checking into the hotel in the evening, we entered and were greeted with the sounds of a live show performance in the lobby lounge. Everywhere we looked, celebrity portraits smiled back at us.
In 1957, Hollywood legends Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz founded the Indian Wells Resort. Their pictures line the walls of the resort.
The Indian Wells Golf Resort is the only 36 hole course in California and is ranked as number 11 by recent Conde Nast Travellers.
Hotel rooms provide lots of space for families and in-room hotel spa treatments. Surprisingly rates are extremely budget-friendly.
The hotel’s resort fee covers parking, breakfast for two people daily, transportation to and from the Indian Wells golf courses, wireless internet and complimentary nightly entertainment to Indian Wells Live for two. At the time of our visit, the fee was $47.
Quality Massage & Facials Mobile Spa
We took a well-deserved wellness break to recharge and welcomed the services of Quality Massage & Facials Mobile Spa. It was exactly what we needed and it’s the ideal solution for families with back-to-back services so one adult can be with the children while the other is enjoying their services. We took turns swapping out to spend quality time at the pool with the kids.
When we arrived back at the hotel from our Jeep Adventure Tour and lunch, our room was already transformed into a relaxing spa-like atmosphere. We selected one of the Quality Massage & Facials Mobile Spa most popular treatments, the Mobile Season of Beauty, which is 90 minutes or 2 hours of tranquility, which includes 2 or 3 treatments (massage, facial and/or scrub).
We both had the massage and facial. We have had a lot of services over the years and found the highly skilled therapist one of the best.
