Demand for Electric Vehicles (EVs) in India has been gradually increasing. Most options are in the premium price bracket, including the MG ZS EV, Hyundai Kona, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, and offerings from BYD, BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Volvo, and Jaguar. However, there are six affordable or budget EVs that could make for a good purchase this festive season. Let’s take a look at the key details of these affordable electric cars in India.

Affordable Electric Cars In India

MG Comet EV – Rs 6.99 lakh

The MG Comet EV is the most affordable and smallest electric car on sale in the country. Prices for the model lineup start from Rs 6.99 lakh and go up to Rs 9.53 lakh. Recently, the carmaker introduced the BaaS (battery-as-a-service) program at Rs 2.5 per km, bringing the base price down to Rs 4.99 lakh. This small EV comes with a 17.3kWh battery pack and a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) electric motor generating 42PS of power and 110Nm of torque. The Comet EV offers a claimed range of up to 230 km.

Tata Tiago EV – Rs 7.99 lakh

The Tata Tiago EV is one of the most affordable electric cars in India. Currently, the electric hatchback is available in four trims – XE, XT, XZ+, and XZ+ Tech Lux – priced from Rs 7.99 lakh to Rs 11.49 lakh. It is offered with two battery packs – 19.2kWh and 24kWh – promising ranges of 250 km and 315 km, respectively. Similar to Tata’s other EVs, the Tiago EV features the brand’s Ziptron high-voltage architecture, which includes a permanent magnet synchronous electric motor. The motor paired with the bigger and smaller batteries produces 74bhp with 114Nm and 61bhp with 110Nm, respectively.

Tata Nexon EV – Rs 8 lakh

Prices for the Tata Nexon EV start from Rs 8 lakh and go up to Rs 15.50 lakh. The model lineup is available in three trims (Creative, Fearless, Empowered) and multiple variants, all packed with a 40.5kWh battery and an electric motor. Recently, the company launched a larger 45kWh battery pack version, priced from Rs 13.99 lakh to Rs 16.99 lakh. Additionally, the new Empowered+ Red Dark Edition with the larger battery is available at Rs 17.19 lakh. However, the Empowered 45 variants are priced above Rs 15 lakh. The 40.5kWh battery version offers a range of 465 km, while the larger 45kWh battery variants deliver 489 km.

Tata Punch EV – Rs 9.99 lakh

Launched earlier this year, the Tata Punch EV is currently available in the price range of Rs 9.99 lakh – Rs 14.29 lakh. The electric micro-SUV is available with either a 25kWh or a 35kWh battery. While the former offers a MIDC range of 315 km, the latter provides 421 km. There are three charging options – a 3.3kW wall box charger, a 7.2kW fast charger, and a DC fast charger. The Punch EV Long Range variant produces 122bhp and 190Nm of torque, and it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in under 9.5 seconds.

Tata Tigor EV

The updated Tata Tigor EV was launched in 2022 with the Ziptron high-voltage architecture, featuring a 26kWh lithium-ion battery pack and an electric motor. The company offers an 8-year/1,60,000 km warranty on its battery and motor. It accelerates from 0 to 60 km/h in 5.7 seconds and can be charged from 0 to 80 percent in 60 minutes. Some of its key features include a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, leather-wrapped steering wheel, cruise control, and leatherette upholstery. Currently, the electric sedan is priced between Rs 12.49 lakh and Rs 13.75 lakh.

MG Windsor EV – Rs 13.50 lakh

The MG Windsor EV is the latest electric offering from the British automaker in India. It’s also the first product to come under the MG and JSW joint venture, which was formed earlier this year. All variants of the Windsor EV are priced between Rs 13.50 lakh and Rs 15.50 lakh. This electric compact MPV is also available with the BaaS (battery-as-a-service) scheme, under which buyers pay a minimal fee of Rs 3.5 per km. The Windsor EV features a 38kWh LFP battery and offers a range of 331 km. It comes with four driving modes – Eco, Eco+, Normal, and Sport. Its battery can be charged from 0 to 80 percent in 55 minutes with a fast charger.
