Tata Punch Becomes Fastest Indian SUV To Cross 4 Lakh Sales

SUV generally means a rugged ladder frame chassis and a go-anywhere four wheel drive (4X4) layout. Well, that’s what it used to mean before crossovers came along and took the SUV name. So, every high riding car out there is now termed a SUV, and even buyers have happily accepted this. So, who’re we to complain? With that out of the way, drum roll, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, and everyone in between – the Tata Punch becomes the fastest Indian SUV to cross 4 lakh units in sales. And what a journey it’s been.

Launched less than 3 years ago, in October 2021, as the smallest SUV in Tata Motors’ line up, the Punch has only gone from strength to strength. While Tata introduced the Punch with a solitary 1.2 liter-3 cylinder Revotron petrol engine, the choice of powerplants now include a CNG unit and also an electric powertrain. There are two, or rather three gearboxes to choose from.
Petrol Punch buyers can opt between the 5 speed manual and a 5 speed AMT while CNG Punch buyers have to settle with the manual. Electric Punch buyers get a single speed automatic, which is the de-facto standard across nearly every electric car sold in India. All in all, there’s a fair bit of choice for the buyer, and this is a big reason why the Punch is finding so many happy households across the country.
The other big reason why the Tata Punch is doing so well is because of the way it looks. The Punch has a genuine SUV vibe to it, with butch looks all around. Why, Tata Moors even enlisted the great Indian Rhino – an animal known for its toughness – to market the Punch.

The Punch doesn’t just look Rhino-like, but is also built like one. With a perfect 5 star Bharat NCAP rating, the Punch is one sturdy SUV, and in terms of points scored in the crash test, it even did better than its more expensive sibling – the Tata Nexon. Now, that’s saying something, isn’t it. Affordable doesn’t have to be unsafe, and the Punch is the brand ambassador of that.

So, the Punch has managed to race past 4 lakh unit sales in just 34 months of its launch. How long before we celebrate the Punch blasting past 5 lakh sales? 6-8 months is what we reckon given the dream run this pocket sized powerhouse is having.
