Ali Asgar Defends Portraying ‘Dadi’ In Comedy Nights With Kapil, Says “Nothing To Get Offended”

Ali Asgar is one of the most famous actors of the country and he has impressed the audiences many times with his acting skills in serials and movies as well. The best thing about Ali Asgar is that he can play any type of role with ease which is a sign of his versatility.

Ali Asgar was also a part of Comedy Nights with Kapil, a show which was headed by the ace comedian Kapil Sharma and in that show, Ali used to play the character of Kapil’s grandmother (dadi).  He played this character from 2013 to 2016 and later on, he returned as Nani as the show was shifted to a different channel.
Recently, Ali Asgar appeared on Mukesh Khanna’s show on his YouTube channel in which he answered many questions and also opened up on various aspects of his professional life.
Actor Mukesh Khanna who is best known for playing Bheeshm Pitamah is B.R. Chopra’s Mahabharat and the character of Indian superhero Shaktimaan is quite critical of Kapil Sharma and his show because below the belt jokes are used in the comedy show.

During the interaction, Mukesh Khanna talked about the character of Dadi played by Ali Asgar and he asked Ali whether he doesn’t think that it was a vulgar and awful type of character.
Ali defended the character and also gave the reason as to why a boy was dressed as a girl. He said, “It’s your personal opinion. So I can’t say anything. People always ask why they make a boy into a girl. The reason for it, from my understanding, is that nobody’s dadi (grandmother) will be like me. She wouldn’t be that energetic.”
He further added, “The timing of our shootings would be very skewed. We used to shoot very late in the night, after shooting two episodes in the day. There had to be gag and integration, gag and integration, so it used to get very late. Now, in all this, if you make a senior actress dadi then she’d have a tough time shooting so late, being an old lady.”

However, Mukesh Khanna was not convinced with the answer as he said, “That’s not the right reason, do heroines not work raat raat bhar (on night shifts)?” and in response, Ali Asgar stated, “My second reason is, when we make a boy into a woman, then it is not an original character by itself. Hence, we can take a lot of creative liberty and do a lot of masti (fun). Since the character is not original, there is nothing to get offended about.”
Ali Asgar also talked about the show and said, “The premise of the show is of a family which is glamour struck. Then there is a dadi, there are these two sisters, Gutthi, the character Sunil (Grover) plays, there is a servant and a wife. It is a poor family, they don’t have money, they are kangaal (broke). All the characters that we played on the show, we were all underdogs. Before making fun of someone else we would make fun of ourselves.”

Ali Asgar is not a part of Kapil Sharma’s show since 2017 but the manner in which he played the characters, he made dadi and nani memorable or rather impossible to forget for everyone.
