India-Bound New Skoda Kodiaq Scores 5 Stars at Euro NCAP

The flagship SUV from the German car marque was recently spotted testing on the Indian public roads without any camouflage.

The new-gen Skoda Kodiaq bagged a full 5-star safety rating at the Euro NCAP. Kodiaq is about to launch in India. In fact, we have even spotted it testing on our roads without any camouflage. Kodiaq is the flagship SUV from the Czech carmaker in the country. Skoda has been planning to expand its portfolio in our market. This includes new cars, as well as facelift versions of old vehicles. In any case, the Kodiaq will show us the best that Skoda has to offer from its international lineup.

Skoda Kodiaq Euro NCAP

The Skoda Kodiaq bagged full 5 stars at the Euro NCAP testing. This includes 89% score in Adult Occupant Protection (AOP), 83% score in Child Occupant Protection (COP), 82% score in the Vulnerable Road Users category and 78% score in the Safety Assist section. The large SUV had frontal airbags, side head airbags, side chest airbags, side pelvis airbags, a centre airbag, ISOFIX child seat mounts (front and rear), seat belt reminder, belt pretensioner, belt load limiter, airbag cut-off switch and tons of ADAS equipment as standard.

Adult Occupant Protection

In the AOP category, the Kodiaq secured an impressive 35.7 points out of a possible 40. This includes 11.7 points out of 16 in the Frontal Impact, 16 points out of 16 in Lateral Impact, 4 out of 4 in Rear Impact and 4 points out of 4 in Rescue and Extrication. The dummies for the knees and femurs of the driver and passenger showed good protection. In fact, all critical body areas of the passenger were well protected. Also, the passenger compartment of the Kodiaq was stable in the frontal offset test. In the side barrier and pole impact tests, the protection of all critical body areas was good.

In fact, the vehicle scored maximum points in this section of the test. The SUV has the capabilities to mitigate against occupant-to-occupant injuries in such impacts and this performed well in Euro NCAP’s test, with good protection of the heads of both front occupants. In the rear-end collision, the front seats and head restraints displayed good protection against whiplash. The Kodiaq even gets an eCall system which alerts for emergency services.

Child Occupant Protection

For the COP section, the Skoda Kodiaq scored 40.9 points out of a possible 49. This includes 23.9 points out of 24 in the Crash Test Performance based on the 6 and 10-year-old children, 6 points out of 13 in safety features and almost perfect 11 points out of 12 in CRS Installation Check. For both child dummies, there was good protection for all critical body areas in the frontal offset and side barrier tests. In fact, the front passenger airbag can be disabled to allow a rearward-facing child restraint. The driver had the information regarding the status of the airbag. It even has a child presence detection system.

Vulnerable Road Users

In this department, the large SUV received 51.7 points out of a maximum of 63. This incorporates 28.6 points out of 36 for VRU Impact Protection, 6.3 points out of 9 in AEB Pedestrian, 7.6 points out of 8 in AEB Cyclist, 0.8 points out of 1 in Cyclist Dooring Prevention, 6 points out of 6 in AEB Motorcyclist and 2.5 points out of 3 in Lane Support Motorcyclist. In this final segment, the Skoda Kodiaq secured 14.2 points out of 18. The details include 1.7 points out of 3 in Speed Assistance, 1.3 points out of 3 in Occupant Status Monitoring, 3 points out of 3 in Lane Support and 8.2 points out of 9 in AEB Car-to-Car. This section concentrates on the autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system. Interestingly, the seatbelt reminder is standard for front and rear seats including the third row. The system can even detect drive fatigue. Furthermore, the speed assistance system can even identify the local speed limit. The driver can choose to allow the limiter to be set automatically by the system. All these aspects contribute to a maximum 5-star safety rating at the highly stringent Euro NCAP. It will surely be a great pull for a whole bunch of potential customers.
