Kawasaki Unveils Hydrogen-Powered Motorcycle Prototype at Suzuka Circuit

Kawasaki has taken a major step towards a cleaner future for motorcycles with the first public demonstration of its hydrogen-powered internal combustion engine (ICE) motorcycle at the Suzuka Circuit in Japan.

Developed as part of a research project initiated in March 2023, this prototype showcases a modified version of Kawasaki’s familiar 998cc inline four-cylinder supercharged engine, known from the Kawasaki H2 range. The key modification? The ability to directly inject hydrogen fuel into the cylinders. The motorcycle’s chassis has also been redesigned to accommodate the hydrogen fuel canisters and supply system.

“Hydrogen engines operate similarly to conventional gasoline engines,” explains Project Leader Satoaki Ichi. “Air is taken in, mixed with fuel, and then combusted. However, in the case of hydrogen, the byproduct is water vapor. You can even feel the moisture near the exhaust pipe.” This characteristic offers a distinct advantage over traditional gasoline engines, making the hydrogen motorcycle potentially suitable for clean air zones and ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) regulations.

Beyond environmental benefits, Ichi highlights the potential performance advantages of hydrogen combustion. “Hydrogen burns faster and across a wider range of conditions compared to gasoline,” he states. “This translates to a potentially more responsive riding experience.”

While this is still an early research stage, the successful public demonstration marks a significant milestone. Kawasaki is actively conducting riding tests and promises further developments on this “environmentally friendly future motorcycle.”

This project aligns with Kawasaki’s commitment to HySE (Hydrogen Small mobility & Engine technology), a collaborative research effort involving leading Japanese manufacturers like Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, and Toyota. HySE focuses on the development of hydrogen engines, fueling systems, and infrastructure for small mobility vehicles, including motorcycles.
