Maruti Suzuki Retails 1.81 Lakh Cars in August 2024 Despite 4% YoY Decline
Maruti Suzuki India Limited, the nation’s leading car manufacturer, has reported its sales figures for August 2024, showing a total of 1,81,782 units sold. This total includes domestic sales, exports, and sales to other Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). However, the company experienced a 4% year-on-Year decline compared to the 1,89,082 units sold in August 2023. Despite this slight drop, Maruti Suzuki continues to dominate the Indian auto market.
Domestic Sales Performance
In the domestic market, Maruti Suzuki sold 69,406 passenger cars, a decrease from the 85,509 units sold in August 2023. Including utility vehicles (SUVs) and vans, the total domestic passenger vehicle sales reached 1,43,075 units, down from 1,56,114 units in the same month last year.
Mini Segment: The Alto and S-Presso models recorded a combined sales figure of 10,648 units, down from 12,209 units in August 2023. This segment saw a dip in numbers, reflecting changing customer preferences in the small car segment.
Compact Segment: The compact car lineup, including popular models like the Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, Swift, and WagonR, collectively sold 58,051 units. This is a significant drop from 72,451 units in August 2023, yet it remains a crucial part of Maruti’s portfolio.
Mid-Size Segment: The Ciaz, Maruti’s mid-size sedan, saw sales of 707 units, slightly lower than the 849 units sold in the same period last year. This segment continues to face stiff competition from other new cars on the market.
Utility Vehicles (SUVs): The SUV segment, which includes the Brezza, Ertiga, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Invicto, Jimny, and XL6, registered a strong performance with 62,684 units sold, up from 58,746 units in August 2023. This growth reflects the rising popularity of SUVs among Indian consumers.
Vans: The versatile Eeco van sold 10,985 units, a slight decrease from 11,859 units in the previous year. The van remains a preferred choice for many, despite the minor dip.
OEM Sales
Sales to Toyota Kirloskar Motors and other OEMs surged to 10,209 units in August 2024, a substantial increase from the 5,790 units recorded in August 2023. This includes the sales of rebadged models like the Baleno, Fronx, and Ertiga, highlighting the growing collaboration between auto giants.
Export Sales
Maruti Suzuki’s export performance also saw positive growth, with 26,003 units shipped in August 2024, up from 24,614 units in August 2023. This uptick underscores Maruti’s strong demand in international markets, particularly with the recent export of the Made-in-India Fronx to Japan.
Light Commercial Vehicles
The Super Carry, Maruti’s light commercial vehicle (LCV), recorded sales of 2,495 units in August 2024, slightly down from 2,564 units in the same month last year. Despite this minor decline, the Super Carry remains a reliable choice in the commercial vehicle segment.
