My discussion with Madan Gowri and Abishek Raja

“So, what are some films (not necessarily Tamil) where you feel mediocre writing is elevated by strong direction that?”

I would say KAITHI. The writing for the second half is very predictable at times (some events can be seen coming from a mile away), but Lokesh’s work as a filmmaker felt interesting. Not one scene ‘looks’ generic, though some ‘feel’.

If you remember the scene where Dilli is unconscious and someone breaks those gold ear rings, it is very much predictable how the fight would go on and how Dilli will teach them a lesson – because that sentimentality is a crutch in mainstream cinema… What changes the scene’s impact is the staging. The shot of Dilli’s hand with the cuffs rising from a heap of rowdies, the score, the mood… it is a case of generic writing elevated by good direction for me.

Or, we have to look at those questioning the logic behind John Wick surviving and functioning normally after falling from all those stairs in JW4. That is bad writing, honestly, but the way it is staged made it exhilarating and so fun.
