Nithilan Saminathan’s ‘Maharaja’ has lots of “wow” moments, but they do not result in an organic, cohesive narrative

The movie stars Vijay Sethupathi, Anurag Kashyap, Natty Subramanian, Mamta Mohandas, Abhirami. The screenplay is so mechanically created that the emotional impression is muted.

Just after Kurangu Bommai and now Maharaja, I believe we can say that Nithilan Saminathan is a plot-primarily based filmmaker – as opposed to a character-centered filmmaker. This is not to say that a film that is dependent on plot can’t have strong character arcs, or that a character-centered drama does not want a plot. But Nithilan’s movies are so intricately constructed that surprise is all the things to him, and this “big reveal” is attained by development and contrivance meant to shock the audience. In Kurangu Bommai, this technique of hiding facts and slowly but surely revealing just what desires to be disclosed worked comparatively perfectly. And – surprisingly, for that plot-primarily based movie – it was the connection amongst the characters performed by Bharathiraja and PL Thenappan that gave the film its soul. That massive monologue by the Bharathiraja character – that was all the things. It recognized a friendship that defined the complete movie, from the breakup of an alliance at the beginning to the villain’s plight at the finish.
