Carmakers to offer discounts to customers who choose to scrap their vehiclesIn a recent statement, Nitin Gadkari, the Minister of Road Transport & Highways, announced that several vehicle manufacturers will offer discounts to consumers who choose to scrap their old vehicles when purchasing new ones. This initiative is part of a broader effort to promote Circular Economy practices and encourage the transition to cleaner and more efficient vehicles.According to Gadkari, commercial and passenger vehicle manufacturers will provide discounts ranging from 1.5% to 3.5% for those who present a valid Certificate of Deposit from scrapping their older vehicles. This move is intended to support the government’s goals of reducing vehicle emissions and enhancing road safety by replacing older, more polluting vehicles with newer models. The announcement follows previous remarks by Vinod Aggarwal, President of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM). Aggarwal had highlighted the need for more substantial incentives to boost the impact of the existing scrappage policy, which has not yet significantly influenced vehicle replacement rates. The introduction of these discounts is expected to provide a financial incentive for vehicle owners to participate in the scrapping program, further advancing the goals of the Circular Economy and promoting environmental sustainability. What are your thoughts on this proposal by the Indian government?
