Not Bindiya Goswami But This Actress Was Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s First Choice For Gol Maal

Released in 1979, “Gol Maal” which is directed by legendary Hrishikesh Mukherjee is one of the most loved comedies in Indian cinema. Starring Utpal Dutt and Amol Palekar in lead roles, the film remains a significant contribution to Indian film culture. Known for its simplicity and wit, “Gol Maal” continues to entertain audiences even today. There are many interesting facts associated with the movie and today we will let you know about a few of them.

One fascinating fact about “Gol Maal” is that the film was completed in just 40 days. Despite the challenges of such a short production timeline, Hrishikesh Mukherjee successfully directed the movie, turning it into one of the most remembered comic classics. A large portion of the film was shot at a bungalow named Anupama in Bandra, which belonged to the director himself.
The role of Urmila, played by Bindiya Goswami, almost went to Rekha, one of Bollywood’s most popular actresses at the time. According to reports, Hrishikesh Mukherjee initially considered casting Rekha but later decided against it, feeling that her presence in the male-centric film would not be ideal. This led to Bindiya Goswami being cast for the role instead.

“Gol Maal” was a huge box office success, earning seven times its production budget. Made with a budget of Rs 1 crore, the film went on to collect Rs 7 crore, making it one of the biggest hits of 1979. This remarkable achievement solidified its status as a classic.
The film’s cast was filled with talented actors, including Amol Palekar, Deven Verma, Shobha Khote, Manju Singh, Dina Pathak, David Abraham, Harish Magon, Anjan Srivastav and Yunus Parvez. The story penned by Sailesh Dey and the screenplay by Sachin Bhowmick with dialogues written by Rahi Masoom Reza came together to create a timeless film loved by generations.

Indeed, “Gol Maal” is a timeless classic and no one would want to miss the chance of watching it if the movie re-releases in theatres.
