I watched Kalki in 3D during the week-end. The 3D experience was very good.
When a movie is actually shot using proper 3D cameras and is photographed with 3D in mind, the end result is infinitely better than a film that was converted into 3D after the fact. Kalki has been made in 3D, so some of the scenes require watching in 3D.
The fight scene between Bachan and Prabhas, the Mahabharat scenes and the climax, with the visuals of the attack on Shambala, notably. I am a huge fan of those big Hollywood productions and I usually go to the theatres only to watch these deals these days. Hindi films have become a OTT watch for me most of the times, baring a few exceptions. I may be wrong in my perception, but I usually feel, especially during the last couple of decades, that I lose out on nothing in terms of cinematic experience when I watch a Hindi film on my 85 inches tv at home. Most of them are good watch and these are rom-coms or small social films but look and sound like films made for OTT and lack that grandeur, so I watch most of them at home.
Kalki is an event film for Hindi cinema. I found the 3D version very enjoyable and I affirm that while I am used to watch those large scale Hollywood films in that format. The visuals were still impressive and they beat anything Indian cinema has offered in that respect. Like the film or not, like the narrative or not, like the plot or not, one cannot help admire the vision and the visuals in there.
One final note is that, I find it laudable that the makers had the idea of projecting Indian mythology in respect of the past and its projection of the future. The bankrupt makers from Bollywood, most of them, cannot think any further than than life and experience in Bandra and they are unable to target any audience beyond those coming from that strata.
When you take the richness of Indian mythology and wrap in emotions in an efficient manner, it appeals to the audience universally. That’s what both Bahubali did. That’s what even Gadar 1 (the Ramayana) and Gadar 2 (Arjun and Abhimanyu) did. Kalki, for those who are well versed in that respect, digs into Hindu mythology and comes up with a story that connects with the audience at large. But one also needs to have creative vision to project that onto the screen efficiently. Every scene shows that vision.

DunkiWatched it last night. I can affirm that Hirani is past it, really. Can’t see him coming back from such a poor film. This reminds me if Subhash Ghai at the times of Yaadein or Kisna. A film maker who had lost the plot.
The film is unintentionally hilarious. The plot has huge gaps and even defies logic at various times. Even the basic premise: just think about it- so this group can risk their lives, spend loads of money, take bullets, famine, walk underwater, walk for days in a desert, cross borders, , most of them getting killed in the process.. BUT they can’t take an IELTS exam again!! They have the will power to cross thousands of miles, dangers and borders, but not strive to pass an exam!!
The best parts are rehash of an old tv series called Mind Your Language. And from then on, you have ridiculous and poorly executed scenes like the group walking under water for hours. Late Ramanand Sagar executed it way way better over 40 years back.
The court scene defies logic. Never seen a Court Judge so intent to encourage the defendants to lie and so enthusiastic to hand out permits to stay as asylum refugees. The church scene where the group get caught defies logic . Here are people who have survived adversities and never got caught but they get caught here in the middle of a farce! Same for a pivotal scene that shows you thar the group finally find a way to return to India. Very poorly executed. The film ends with the predictable gimmicks of a lead dying of terminal disease right when she is getting proposed for marriage, having waited 25 years for that moment. It all seems forced, stereotypical, shamelessly manipulative, but it leaves you very cold.
Kaushal is alright but SRK despite his best efforts fails to leave a mark. He is like the main moments of the film. Fails to convince or lift up the poor proceedings.
This film has made 200cr (including 30cr of corporate booking, as we all know) merely on the back of SRK’s recent success. In terms of quality, this is at Tubelight level.
**************************************************************************************************Animal is a wet dream for the Indian man, whether lower or middle class. It is the readin why it has worked:
-He gets to seduce and conquer the girlfriend of another by being the alpha male– also seduces his buddy’s sister in the process– makes love to his wife tirelessly for days (and that too in a plane!)– he is great in bed as evidenced by audio recordings of love making with his wife.– when trouble brews up, he gathers his kins, brothers and cousins. All united in adversity and he is the leader of the pack and protector of family.– he leads the dynasty and takes over his father’s legacy at the expense of his brother in law/sister– he plays with guns like John Wick or in PS games.– he gets to sleep with another woman and is forgiven by his wife– he is the macho man who dictates everything and his wife complies.– he sleeps with woman only to use her– he chooses his family over his wife and she stays under one roof with them even if she does not want to.– his dad is his role model and is more important than his wife and be manages to win over his role model– he manages to convince everyone that his methods are right– in a mahabharat kind of feud, with step brother, he wins the war and wins over everyone.
