Tata Curvv vs Maruti Grand Vitara Comparison
5 min readTata Motors has launched the Curvv coupe SUV in the electric guise and announced the details of the ICE variants.
This comparison between the Tata Curvv and Maruti Grand Vitara will help those who are looking for a mid-size SUV. This market segment is one of the fastest growing in the country. At present, the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and Maruti Grand Vitara are the top sellers in this space. In fact, the Curvv becomes the second SUV to bear the coupe silhouette around this price point after the Citroen Basalt. Hence, there is unique appeal to the Curvv. On the other hand, the Grand Vitara is a popular SUV which is available with petrol, strong hybrid and all-wheel-drive configurations to cater to a large customer base. For now, let us take a look at the details of this comparison
Tata Curvv vs Maruti Grand Vitara – Specs and Price
Tata Curvv
The Tata Curvv is available in petrol, diesel and electric avatars. Since the Grand Vitara doesn’t have an electric version, we are not discussing the details of the Curvv.ev. Instead, we shall focus on the ICE version of the Curvv. Tata Motors explained in depth about the engine and transmission options available with the Curvv in ICE guise during the launch event. It will offer three powertrain alternatives – a new 1.2-litre GDi turbo petrol engine called Hyperion which produces a decent 125 hp and 225 Nm (250 Nm transient torque on demand), 1.2-litre turbo petrol which outputs a familiar 118 hp and 170 Nm and a 1.5-litre turbo diesel engine called Kryojet, which belts out a handy 115 hp and 260 Nm of peak power and torque, respectively.
Performing transmission duties will be either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed DCT automatic gearbox. This is the first time a Tata car is using DCT with a diesel engine. The Indian auto giant is confident of a 5-star safety rating at the Bharat NCAP. For this, there have been appropriate components in the build quality. The prices of the Curvv in the ICE version will be announced on September 2. But I expect them to be around Rs 10 lakh to Rs 17 lakh, ex-showroom.

Maruti Grand Vitara
On the other hand, Maruti Grand Vitara offers customers a wide variety of powertrain options. These include either a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder mild hybrid which delivers 103 hp and 136 Nm or a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder strong hybrid, incorporating an AC synchronous electric motor and a Lithium-ion battery pack, producing 116 hp and 141 Nm of peak power and torque, respectively. The former can also be purchased with an all-wheel-drive configuration. Hence, the adventure-seekers will be able to take their mid-size SUV across moderately challenging terrains with ease.
The mild hybrid mill pairs with either a 5-speed manual transmission (MT) or a 6-speed automatic transmission (AT). On the other hand, the strong hybrid engine comes with a sole e-CVT automatic transmission. The major attraction of the strong hybrid engine is its immensely enticing 27.97 km/l mileage figure. That is why people have to spend an extra amount initially. Over the course of ownership, that premium can be compensated due to such high fuel efficiency numbers. In fact, the Grand Vitara even comes with a CNG mill which is capable of producing 87 hp and 121 Nm of peak power and torque. Since Curvv doesn’t have that option, there is no point in discussing it now. The prices range from Rs 10.99 lakh to Rs 20.09 lakh, ex-showroom.

Our View
Now both these look like compelling propositions to me. Tata Curvv is the newest entrant into the Indian market. Therefore, it offers tons of modern amenities to pamper and woo new customers. That is often the case with every new product. Carmakers study the market trends and customer preferences and launch a new product accordingly. On top of that, the Curvv is an entirely new product from the ground up. Until now, Tata Motors didn’t have a vehicle in the mid-size SUV segment in India. This represents the space between Nexon and Harrier. Hence, this will cover that gap beautifully. Also, its coupe SUV silhouette is something people are not used to at this price point. That will be its advantage over its rivals in this space.
On the other hand, the Maruti Grand Vitara is a successful mid-size SUV. It has been doing decently well on the sales charts since its inception. We know that Maruti Suzuki is a name that people trust immensely in India. The fact that the Grand Vitara offers two powertrains and the option of an AWD version, helps its cause a lot. Before making a decision, we will have to wait for the price revelation of the Curvv on September 2. Post that, we can make up our minds according to the requirements.
