Volvo to Reveal Hybrid XC90 Facelift and Electric EX90 at 90/90 Day

Volvo is set to reveal a “substantially refreshed” version of its XC90 SUV on September 4 during the highly anticipated 90/90 Day event. This unveiling will feature both the fully electric Volvo EX90 and the updated hybrid XC90, marking a significant step in Volvo’s transition toward a more sustainable future. As part of this shift, the XC90 will now come equipped with a hybrid powertrain, aligning with Volvo’s broader strategy to offer more hybrid options amidst a global slowdown in electric vehicle (EV) demand.

Volvo has released a teaser for the new XC90, showcasing a sculpted bonnet design and subtle changes to the iconic Thor’s Hammer LED headlights. The refreshed XC90 is expected to closely resemble its electric counterpart, the EX90, in terms of design, with updates anticipated in both the body and the interior, which will likely include a minimalist layout centered around a 14.5-inch vertically oriented touchscreen powered by Volvo’s Google-based system. Additionally, the new XC90 may feature advanced technologies such as a laser-based surround-view sensing system called LiDAR, alongside eight cameras and radar.

This refresh marks the first significant update to the XC90 since its launch in 2015, reflecting Volvo’s commitment to keeping its flagship SUV competitive as the industry evolves. Jim Rowan, Volvo’s CEO, has emphasized the need to cater to buyers who are not yet ready to fully embrace electric vehicles, suggesting that Volvo will continue to introduce hybrid versions of its existing internal combustion engine (ICE) models.

The 90/90 Day event promises to be a landmark moment for Volvo, not only with the debut of the refreshed XC90 but also with the launch of the all-new EX90, the company’s first model based on the EV SPA2 architecture. The EX90 features a three-row seating arrangement and a 111kWh battery pack, offering a WLTP range of 600km. While the EX90 is set to launch internationally on September 4, its India debut is planned for 2025.

Details regarding the India launch of the updated XC90 are yet to be confirmed. However, the current generation of the XC90 is available in India, starting at Rs 1.01 crore (ex-showroom).
