Mahindra Thar ROXX launched at Rs 12.99 lakh

The highly-anticipated 5-door version of the second-gen Thar is finally out in the market with a rather cheesy name and a mouth-watering starting price. It’s called the Thar ROXX, and prices start at INR 12.99 lakh, ex-showroom. Unlike its 3-door sibling, the ROXX offers RWD and 4WD variants right from the launch. However, currently, the prices are available only for the RWD variants.

The prices of the 4WD variants will be announced at a later date, but your local dealer might have some reliable information. Also, notice that, unlike its 3-door sibling, the petrol 4WD combination is not available (yet). Mahindra might discontinue affordable base variants at a later date—as it did with the 3-door Thar.

Let’s address the elephant in the room then, shall we? Ever since Mahindra revealed this 5-door version, people have been expressing their strong opinions regarding its design, and rightfully so. It appears that strange design decisions have been made in the quest to avoid a lawsuit. In other words, the design team has desperately tried to make the Thar ROXX not look like the Wrangler, and the result is a messy design. The front half of the vehicle isn’t jelling with the rear half; the entire vehicle looks as though two or three different vehicles glued together. It’s difficult to understand the goal of the design team here; were they trying to make the 5-door version appear like an extended wheelbase 3-door truck mimicking a bed with a roll cage at the back? I’m not sure. Also, the inclined roof design gives it vintage vibes, adding to the weirdness of the design.

But anyway, key exterior features depending on the trim include LED projector headlights, LED DRLs, LED taillights, 19-inch Diamond-cut alloy wheels, and a panoramic sunroof. The 4WD models boast features such as Intelliturn (brakes rear inner wheel to help with tight turns), electric driveline disconnect on the front axle, and Electric Locking Differential. Brake Locking Differential is standard across all variants.

Key features inside include a 10.2-inch HD touchscreen, a 10.2-inch digital cluster, Harman Kardon premium audio system, AdrenoX connected car functions, wireless Android Auto & Apple CarPlay connectivity, 6-way power driver’s seat, front ventilated seats, auto AC, and an active carbon filter.
6 airbags, ESC, EBD, Hill Hold Control, Hill Decent Control, Traction Control System, Vehicles Dynamics Control, and Roll Over Mitigation, are standard across all trims. The AX models get Level 2 ADAS. Download the brochure here.

Moving on to the juicy bits of the story, the petrol engine is a 2.0L 4-cylinder turbocharged unit (Stallion), offering 119 kW (162 metric hp) and 330 Nm (243 lb-ft) with 6-MT, and 130 kW (177 metric hp) and 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) with 6-AT. The diesel engine is a 2.2L 4-cylinder turbocharged unit (mHawk), offering 111.9 kW (152 metric hp) and 330 Nm (243 lb-ft) in RWD 6-MT, RWD 6-AT and 4WD 6-MT. If you opt for 4WD 6-AT, you get 128.6 kW (175 metric hp) and 370 Nm (273 lb-ft), closely matching the numbers of the petrol AT.
