Maruti Suzuki Fronx Long Term Review, May 2024 Report

The Maruti Suzuki Fronx may not be the most powerful offering in the segment – heck, it’s off by a mile – but it does have a fantastically tuned drivetrain

At this point, my familiarity with the dynamics of the Maruti Suzuki Fronx feels like second nature. This month, I had the chance to test drive the latest contender in the compact SUV arena, and I found myself constantly comparing it to the Fronx. It’s worth noting that I’ve had the privilege of driving every single car in this segment, but the Fronx remains my benchmark. While I won’t delve into a direct comparison between the two, I will tell you what became evident to me during this process – Maruti Suzuki has simply nailed the basics. The Fronx may not be the most powerful offering in the segment – heck, it’s off by a mile – but it does have a fantastically tuned drivetrain. Maruti has taken the same formula that everyone else is trying their hand on – turbocharged three-cylinder engines – and then paired it with a Mild Hybrid system – in fact, it’s the only manufacturer to do so. This combination results in a drivetrain that, while not the fastest, is frugal while being quick enough. The Mild Hybrid system contributes in its own little capacity in the lower RPM band before the turbo spools up, after which the boosted engine ensures smooth and consistent power delivery. There’s no noticeable ‘step-up’ in power output, and all this doesn’t come at the expense of fuel efficiency. I think the Fronx strikes a sensible balance between performance, engine tune, and efficiency. It’s a rational choice, given that you don’t succumb to the heart, which always wants more power.
